We fell for Auckland artist So Below's throbbing debut song 'Drift' hook, line and sinker a little while back, and now, having lifted the cloak of anonymity, Maddie North is plunging us deeper into obsession with her second startlingly spaced-out cut, 'Sleep'. Building on the nervous pulse of 'Drift', North takes the restless energy up a notch with her willowy hook, "I can't fall asleep," draped over jagged-edged beat patterns and resonant organ chords. It's a more rounded composition than her enticingly rougher first offering, but possibly our perception of that has just been altered now we know of Aaron Short's (The Naked & Famous) involvement. All we know is this is some of the purest dark-pop we've heard in all of 2015. Irresistible. - DC
